Mac OSX Version 10.6

Hello I’ve have my Mac OS X in storage for a while. It’s working but the apps and websites are not working efficiently. Is the Mac OSX too old to run effectively or can I upgrade software so it runs better and is more useable. I’m not a tech person but I can follow instructions. Thank you in advance.

What is the exact version of your laptop? Click on the Apple menu and select "About this Mac". If it does not show the exact model with size and year listed, then click on the "System Profiler" button on that window. The Apple System Profiler should show something like MBP5,1. You can also get the exact model by entering your serial number here.

Check the App Store and search for "macos" and report what version of macOS it finds.

Also how much memory does your laptop have installed? You may be able to get this information from either "About this Mac" or from the Apple System Profiler.

It seems Crucial doesn't have the 2GB or 4GB memory for your iMac.

Here is the OWC page for the memory for an iMac 7,1. They include an option for up to 6GB of memory. OWC also includes a video detailing the installation process further down on the same page. You do want at least 4GB of memory.

I’m try to download the software and you were right I need at 2gb to run.

I don't have the funds to buy a new computer so if I was to go down the memory route. Would someone like me know how to install/fit the new memory device? Bearing in mind, I’m not technical in comps. I have a new appreciation for people that work in IT.

Furthermore, I went to the website for memory site and see that it does 4GB for Macs, how did I know I’m purchasing the right one for my Mac.

Sorry to sound like like an idiot but i am were this is concerned.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You have a 2007 iMac which can be upgraded to OSX 10.11 El Capitan.

If you have OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard installed, then here is a direct download link for OSX 10.11 El Capitan:

Instructions for creating a bootable macOS USB installer if you want one:

However, 1GB of memory won't be enough to run newer versions of macOS as you need a minimum of 4GB of memory. I really don't feel it is worth putting any money into this iMac because it is so old and OSX 10.11 is getting a bit old as well. The condition of the hard drive is also unknown.

If you do choose to upgrade the memory, then you can purchase a single 4GB module from either Crucial or OWC and keep one of your original memory modules installed.
