Restore your iPad from a backup

Normally after you go through the process of erasing an iOS device and begin to set it up again you are given the option to Set Up as New, or Restore from an iCloud or iTunes backup. What is actually happening when you go through the process? What error message do you get?

i didnt start yet i dont know where to begin

when i tried i pressed on home button and on/off button now it says IPAD DISABLED connect to itunes.
