how to airplay to my home stereo?

Hi, I just upgraded to iOS13 for apple arcade and appleTV+ and suddenly the airport express (generation 1) that I have been using for over a decade, no longer outputs any audio through the audio jack.

I have the last firmware update, so figured I was toast. Am I right? And I started looking around for something that would replace this function and having a lot of trouble getting the same environment.

  1. I've tried using an old android box via kodi but it seems airplay is proprietary and no longer supported.
  2. I've looked into some adaptors like AudioCast, but it relies on software, so if my friends come by to connect with their phones won't they need to download their own software?
  3. I've looked at macworld's "how to add AirPlay to Any Speaker" which idea of using a raspberry pie, and wifi dongles, etc. but I am wary of ordering a bunch of stuff and slapping it together only to have it not work. If it didn't work on my android box running "leia" why would it work on kodi on a raspberry Pi?
  4. I guess I could cave and just go to a bluetooth option but that drastically cuts down on my range and also less sound quality.
  5. I could get an old laptop or mac mini but that might cost and I'd have to keep booting it up all the time.
  6. i could get a home pod but it wouldn't sound as good or have as much power as my current system so that would bug me.

So I realize apple no longer supports airport, but with the latest iOS updates, suddenly this tiny little audio-out function no longer working has left me silenced. What is the best way airPlay my iphone 7 to my old 90's stereo, (with an amp and wires and speakers, turntable), which is perfectly good!

not sure which feedback channel one would suggest something like that since they removed the airport one

Product Feedback - Apple

since they discontinued all airports and knowing the cost of releasing software in terms of RD and QA I was even supprised they released airplay2 support for the latests airport express generation.

FWIW. I still have both the 1st and 2nd gen 802.11n AirPort Express base stations and have used them (interchangeably) with my "old" Pioneer SPEC-1/-2 amp/pre-amp system. I have found both version 7.8 & 7.8.1 firmware to be problematic with AirPlay ... so I downgraded both back to 7.6.9 and have had no issues streaming. In addition, I also used the Express with a "newer" 2000-ish Denon that was not AirPlay capable and it worked great with it as well. Today, most receivers come with AirPlay support, making the base station unnecessary. It's just hard to give up on those older audio HW.

Like you, with Apple abandoning the network hardware business, I eventually will need to find a replacement. So far, nothing comes close as these base stations. I also have a few older Mac mini that I have used as media centers that worked as well, but not as convenient as the base stations.
