Can the fall detection still call emergency services if iPhone isn't nearby (for GPS only models, not GPS Cellular)?
I want to purchase for my aunt but I'm worried the fall detection won't work if her phone isn't nearby.

If AND ONLY IF, the Apple Watch is on WiFi AND your iPhone cellular plan supports WiFi Calling AND you have enabled WiFi Calling.
Otherwise you need your iPhone nearby.
There is no magic here. You need working radios that are connected to the right networks.
