Only the iPad Pro 12.9" and iPad Pro 11" offer a USB-C port that apparently will support USB drives if they are running iPadOS which will released tomorrow for them. No information on whether other iPads with the Lightning port instead of USB-C will support USB drives.

I have been using a Verbatim Store n Go Dual which has both a Lightning and USB connector on it. It may or may not work for you depending on your use. You need the Store n Go app installed to use it. I am able to download a GPS route file through Safari and save it to the drive to be installed on my GPS unit. As a bonus I put a bunch of movies on it for a recent trip.
