change the number on my iPhone. but the number for iMessage is not changing

change the number on my iPhone. but the number for iMessage is not changing. when I am trying to add the number, it says its already associated with my id.

Have you changed the number listed in your Apple ID? After making the change, have you signed out of Messages/FaceTime and then signed back in?
