my phone suddenly lost the ability to connect to cellular services (calls/4G etc..) otherwise everything else worked fine. I tried a DFU restore but it wouldn't restore the phone because it said the firmware is corrupt , what does this mean and what do I do now. my phone is in recovery mode and won't turn on.

I would call apple care, there might be a hardware issue.
Was this phone jailbroken at any point? This would be the only potential way that its firmware could have become corrupted ... or possibly during an unsuccessful update. DFU mode, as you know, will bypass iOS and work directly with iTunes to reinstall the firmware. The key is that it is a bit "tricky" to get the phone to go into this mode. Are you sure that it is in DFU mode, and not Recovery mode?

A non-jailbroken phone cannot get a virus. If you are in recovery mode, then you need to restore it through iTunes on your computer.
im trying to restore it but it says it cannot restore as the firmware file is corrupt
Then try the DFU link posted above. If you still have problems, you may need to get an appointment at an Apple Store for help.
the phone was never jailbroken. could it be a virus? The phone just stopped receiving cell signal half way on a train journey. I think the phone is in recovery mode.
