tvOS 13 User and Account Setting Wont Update...

I installed the upgrade to tvOS 13 without fanfare BUT I ran into a problem with the SETTINGS / USER AND ACCOUNTS / UPDATE APPLE ID SETTINGS menu item ("Menu Item").

This Menu Item has a red notification badge which when pressed read "This AppleTV needs to be authorized to join your Home. It will check with a trusted iOS device to proceed".

When I press the CONTINUE button I am asked to 1. Unock my iPhone 2. Turn in Bluetooth and 3. Hold it close to the Apple TV.

When I do this I am asked to enter the code that appears on the Apple TV. I then get -- on my phone -- a screen which reads "Set up AirPlay and HomeKit on this Apple TV." (see image 1 attached hereto) which after a few seconds is replaced by a screen whcih reads "AirPlay 2 is Ready". (see image 2 attached hereto).

With that I thought that everything worked properly BUT in the Menu Item the red badge continues to appear -- it did not go away. In addition, I have this same problem on ALL THREE of my Apple TVs.

Would appreciate any and all advice / input as to ho best to solve this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just went down to APPLE TV ACCOUNTS > ICLOUD, logged out and back in and it worked.

Then you can use this new option pressing and holding TV button on remote (top right button) - right pane for changing accounts appears

No luck here... tvOS 13 will not release the "This AppleTV needs to be authorized to join your Home. It will check with a trusted iOS device to proceed" request.

I've tried the log out and back it - no luck

logged out again, restart the Apple TV - logged back in , went through the process bringing mu iPhone 8+ (iOS 13.1.2 now) - no luck

try changing user, well.. I only have myself as a user in there, so I see my image and a blank user icon with no name as expected, so no luck there either.

So, I think there is a need for an update from Apple on tvOS...

Any suggestions are welcome...

Thank you PierrefromSaint-Eustace for your additions to this discussion. So far I've now updated 6 Apple TV's and almost half of those updates have hit snags though eventually I was able to eventually get the upgrade installed. However, after writing my comment above, I have discovered lsitkowski suggestion only appears to work until the Apple TV goes to sleep or is restarted at which point the dreaded red cue ball returns! So all those reasons, I second your plea for Apple to quickly introduce a tvOS bug fix update as the current tvOS v13.0 upgrade is the most troublesome in memory.

LumbermanSVO1, I join you in lamenting that recent Apple device upgrades have adversely affected not only your AppleTV but your iOS devices as well. My experience has thankfully been different, though for those that immediately jumped on board with the release of iOS 13.0 on 9/19/19 clearly found a number of bugs in their soup, judging by Apple's quick succession of bug fix and feature updates released since then, already up to v13.1.2 as I type. I would encourage you not to give up but rather to give 13.1.2 a try if you haven't already as on my four iOS and iPadOS devices, in contrast to our Apple TV's still stuck on its original troubled upgrade, all seem to be working well now. Let us know if v13.1.2 quells your issues. As an aside, my advice for the Mac has long been to await a point 2 or point 3 maintenance update before upgrading to a whole new macOS but has been less cautious of new iOS releases, tvOS and watchOS releases. Thanks to you and others here, it appears I need to start applying that more cautious approach to all Apple's OS upgrades.

I found the solution for this problem with Apple support on the phone. Make sure you have homekit and keychain ON, under your iCloud settings for your iPhone, iPad, etc, reboot both devices, then attempt to get these 2 badges under settings on your Apple TV to go away, go through the steps again via Apple TV and everything should be fixed.

I was able to get this done in 5 minutes on the phone with them. They said it's some kind of bug regarding one of the new features in tvOS 13, they escalated the issue to their engineers in the meantime.

Thanks Dayvidpriddy for sharing , it worked. On iPhone it is straight forward to enable HomeKit. For me, on the Apple TV, the only way to "activate" HomeKit was to select a Room in the settings, the Apple TV asked to be activated once, the red badge remained, I went to System -- Restart and after rebooting went to the Settings and the red badge vanished and everything is working.

Still does not work for me. Tried all the combinations suggested above, added a few preliminary adjectives, to no avail.

Still have the red dots, and "This Apple TV need to be authorized to join your Home. It will check with a trusted iOS device to proceed" And then does not proceed.

My iPhone 8 is my only other Apple device, and it has been trusted until 13.0 showed up. Does Apple test these things? I do not have any weird settings... it's just an Apple TV puck and an iPhone.

I've tried both the signing out of iCloud and signing back in method on my ATV, and setting up the HomeKit (even though I don't use HomeKit) on the phone/ATV method, and no luck. In both cases, the red badge goes away, but as soon as I use AirPlay or restart my ATV, the red badges pop back up asking me to finish setting up my ATV. AirPlay is also really crappy now. If I AirPlay music to my ATV, there's about a 10% chance it will show in the Now Playing part of the iTunes Music app. 90% of the time it doesn't register, even though you can hear the audio playing...it acts as if the phone is not connected via AirPlay.

I swear, Apple is now worse than Google when it comes to crappy, bug-riddled software releases. Absolutely infuriating to say the least.

"Does Apple test these things?" is the question I just asked my Apple TV, which after following every suggestion above, finally did appear to have gotten past the update issues, but then refused to play a movie I bought and added to my iTunes library earlier this evening. I've been an extremely loyal Apple customer since 1992…but "it just works" is a slogan no longer applicable to the brand, and I don't think I'll be upgrading or buying anything new from Apple again.

Good News for all our fellow Apple TV tvOS 13 sufferers. In case you haven't noticed yet, early this past week Apple finally introduced a maintenance update to the troubled tvOS v13.0... taking it all the way to v13.2 build 17k82 which appears to have fixed the problems discussed above... at least it has for my four Apple TV's. And for those who read about the problems and wisely held off upgrading to tvOS v13 and are still back at v12, it finally seems safe to upgrade to v13 now and enjoy the new capabilities.
