iOS 13.1 software update and error 14

Trying to update my iPhone's software to iOS 13.1 this evening led to a "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (14)" issue and a waste of about 3 hours. I did not manage to fix the problem and the advice I found online was either dodgy or just did not work. So in the end I had to restore the factory settings (after having to turn a few 2-factor authentications off). So not a good experience but my phone is now working again.

Out of curiosity, did anyone run into the same error but managed to update the iPhone without restoring the factory settings?

Official Apple support:

If you see one of the errors below, check your USB connection, USB cable, USB port, or computer:

  • 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643–1650
  • 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009
  • An error that includes "invalid response"

Here's what to check. Try again after each step:

  1. Use the USB cable that came with your device. If you don't have it, try a different Apple USB cable.
  2. Switch to a different USB port on your computer. Don't plug into your keyboard.
  3. Switch to a USB port on a different computer.
  4. If you still see the error, check for other USB issuescheck your third-party security software, then check your hardware.

If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

Many thanks. I did see and read the official Apple Support page as well but none of the suggestions worked, and to be honest it did not seem to me that they would. I decided to create this post to reach out to others who have had the same issue and managed to sort it out. I kept a copy of the log file and had a look but it is very big. I had a look at some of the errors but it's difficult to understand what they really mean. Here are 2 potentially interesting ones:

...

device returned CFError with code 14

...

error: alloced_size (2265088) of dstream (id 23403467, object-id 23403468) does not match minimum found size (1327104)

...

Depth:2 Code:14 Error:failed to restore APFS image
