i accidentally put things in the cloud but want to save them to my macbook

Help! After being prompted to put things in the cloud for years i finally did and immediately got the notification that it is full and i need to buy more. I don't even know what is in the cloud! And I am really afraid I will lose my research documents and my photos. :( There is enough space on my computer (where all my files were happily saved before) and I have unlimited google drive through work, so I really have no use for it. Please help me find a way to take all things out of the cloud and back onto my macbook.

If you don't want to loose the data stored in iCloud , archive them see the article https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204055

And then downgrade the storage see the article https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT207594

You can also check your use Library to see if the files are there. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Mobile Documents.
