iPadOS 13.1 lightning Port to External HDD Connectivity

Just updated my iPad Pro second gen to the all new iPadOS 13.1, I also brought the lightning to USB camera adapter as I was under the impression that my 500gb buffalo external hdd would pair up so as I could manage files to and fro. Now when I connected the external hdd up to the iPad it said that the accessory uses to much power for me to connect to it. now my point being is that if you rush out to get the above mentioned camera cable @ $49.00 Au just make sure your hdd is compatible. I did not find this out and the gentleman who sold it to me said, “in theory, this should work.” My ext hdd is not the ssd type, hey maybe it’s the ssd ones that will work? For now I may have to settle for the old thumb drive to save my files to, but even these are really only used for transfer. It’s going to be interesting to see what unfolds here with this option.

For this to work reliably, you need to utilise the Apple “Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter” that incorporates both a standard USB Type-A socket (for connection to your storage device) and a Lightning socket (for connection to your external power supply).

Apple’s original Camera Adapter, with only a USB socket, relies on your iDevice in being able to supply sufficient power to the external device; unless your connected device is very low power, or is self powered, your iDevice often cannot provide sufficient power.

The Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter part number is MK0W2ZM/A - Model A1619.

Hi,

This problem is directly linked to the iOS 13.1 version. I have an iPad Pro 10.5 and it got the iOS 13.1 straight away.

I tried to use two different USB sticks (one bought on the Apple website) as well as my audio interface I always used and I got the error message accessory requires too much power. I was using the lightening to USB adapter (not the powered one) from Apple.

I then bought the powered on (Camera adapter + Lightening) and faced the same issue.

I have an iPhone XR and decided to plugged the USB stick and it worked straight away. Now, the iPhone was running iOS 13.0.

Stupidly enough, I updated the iPhone to iOS 13.1 and ta da !!! It is no longer working. Accessory requires too much power ...

Now I have two devices and none of them would take USB accessories so I can’t make music anymore.

Surely there will be an update soon because now it is not possible to use anything related to USB...

Ok so I connected a powered seagate 2tb hdd to the iPad Pro via lightning to camera USB cable and I could access the hd files, the only thing I’ve found is it was taking quite a bit to access the folder with a couple of hundred vids in, when the wait icon had finished nothing showed up at all, however the folder with a few dozen vids in showed the files almost instantly. I also tried a 16gb thumb drive and encountered the same, “accessory uses too much power” as before. It seems to me as though the iPad Pro will read powered external drives with small folder sizes via the lightning/USB transfer, not sure on camera cards though.

it’ll be interesting to see where this goes, I believe Apple has not yet announced compatible Hard drives.

I just upgraded my iPad Mini 5 to 13.1.1 last night. The biggest reason I did so is to take advantage of the file management capabilities. Well, it doesn’t work, at least on my iPad with this particular version.

I have both the camera kit adapter (lightning to USB A without power) and the newer adapter with power input. Neither work; in every case (SSD HD, USB 3, USB 2 thumb drives as small as 8GB) I receive the “too much power” message.

This really sucks. Come on, Apple.
