I've seen plenty of caution over restoring an i4 from an old backup. From these boards, genius bar peeps, etc. That really could be faulty. It's software meant to read hardware from 3 years ago.

I would do a restore as a new phone, making sure to choose the same location for contacts, email, notes, etc as in the past. You will have to sacrifice saved text messages unfortunately.

Oh and make sure to plug it in and back up your pictures / apps.

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone and iPod touch software.

or in another case the iPhone is Disabled for an unknown reason and if you can't boot up into iTunes:

You need to take this up with your carrier....it's the carrier that activates or disables service...

is it asking you for your lock code or your voicemail password??? my phone was activated in the store, but then after I restored my old info to it, the carrier deactivated it and then after reactivation (which took a while, the phone kept asking me for my password -- it was looking or the voicemail password!).. I dialed the carrier (611) and followed the prompts to reset the password and everything was fine again...

Hi firstly id like to opologise for caps but ive got vision problems so my frend is writing this,id like to thank everyone for there help too
the strangest thing is i was putting in the correct lock code its been the same code for 3 years on my iphone 2g
what happened was i somehow had the voiceover telling me to slide or double tap to open to the lockscreen then the voice thing was asking me to enter the passcode and was highlighting with a white edge the 4 numbers but it kept getting stuck & the 4 white boxes were not showing any black dots that usually appear in the boxes and so i tried again & the same thing happened until it said id have to wait 60 minits to try again so it was something to do with voiceover

im just trying to workout why & wat happened coz i had to restore my iphone 4 .i could not get in any otherway .So does anyone know wat happened ,i phoned apple & they said it may of been the voice thing, sorry ive forgotten wat its calles right now

What you would like todo is restore the phone. When asked if you want to use a backup or set up as a new phone choose the Set up as a new phone. That should give you new settings. Since the problem being that VoiceOver is activated and is not allowing you to go past the Lock screen, you can set up the old password again when your past the lockscreen.

This has happened to me several times now. It happens with any app, or for no reason whatsoever. I thought it was the Apple calculator, but I have since disproved that theory. What has happened lately is while within an application, when I exit out of the app, I noticed a white outline box around the app. My wife took on the task to discover the source, in the meantime my passcode lock enabled itself. This seems to be a defect in the coding of the iPhone because the code I use would not work. I have ended up having to restore to recent backups twice now before my wife found the source - it seems that somehow Accessibility VoiceOver enables itself!!

It is a challenge to get this turned off, but this is what I have done for now.

First of all I have turned off my passcode lock (after my last restore) until a fix is made ready because it will not work correctly when VoiceOver is enabled! I do not like having my passcode lock disabled, but for some reason, it will not accept the correct key code.

As soon as I see that a app or item is circled with an outline (mine is white?).

I get to my Settings by tapping it once to select it. then I double tap it to open.

At this point I select General (1 tap).

Then double tap to open it.

Now this is where I must use 3 fingers on the display and wipe UP!

Select Accessibility (1 tap),

then double tap to open up its options.

My VoiceOver shows to be ON.

Select VoiceOver by a single tap.

then double tap to access it.

It will open accessibility tab.

Select VoiceOver “ON” by a single tap.

then double tap to TURN OFF!

Tap Accessibility to return to the previous screen and be certain all options are OFF. For some reason, my Triple-click Home becomes enabled also. I turn it off.

Exit Options and you should have full control of your phone at this point. I did anyway.
Hope this helps.....

HELP! I have the same issue. My phone was not sync to iTunes and my kid cannot remember the passcode and now my phone is disabled. I don't have a carrier yet because I just bought the phone from someone. I tried to restore it through iTunes but it says "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it's locked with a passcode...." I tried to press the power button and the home button but didn't work and tells me to connect to iTunes. What a joke. ITunes won't let me connect and iPhone tells me to connect to iTunes. Appreciate for any possible solution!
