How to erase iPad Air without passcode

I removed the passcode to unlock my iPad . When I try to reset/erase all data etc I am asked to enter 4 digit passcode . I have tried unsuccessfully . I am able to attach to iTunes to restore . I need to erase and factory reset to give to another family member . How can I do this without remembering the passcode .
