I have tried my last 3 passwords, yet am unable to connect to pop.gmail.com - how do I see my password in mail?
if 2 factor authentication is enabled on gmail account one needs to use the site to generate a the app password rather than using the password one use on their webclient

and imap really is a better way than pop3 to recieve mails
On the gmail site when you create a gmail account you can set it up as IMAP or POP. I can't remember now but it is likely that the default is IMAP. So if you set up your client to access your IMAP account using POP it won't work.
Of course this assumes you actually set up a gmail account in gmail.
Are you sure you went into the gmail site and configured your email account as POP?
not sure why, but I must have - I have deleted it now!
