inserting captions and cross referencing

I would like to insert captions to figures or tables, which automatically count and update, if figures or tables are inserted above or below in the document. Further, I would like to cross-reference these captions to sections in the text, again, which will change if the number of the corresponding figure/table changes.
i.e. If I rearrange my tables and figures in a document, I would like that the caption to change to the correct count (Fig 1, Fig 2, Fig 3, etc).
This is easily done in Microsoft Word, by insert caption and cross-reference, but I don't know how to do it in pages.
