The Apple Watch is an iPhone accessory. You need the iPhone for setup, software updates, SMS/MMS texting, and more.

If you want the Cellular model, the Apple Watch uses the iPhone's phone number, it cannot have a solo phone number.

If you do not have the cellular model, then the Apple Watch uses the iPhone for telephone calls, especially emergency services for Fall Detection.
