Hello my son has somehow locked himself out of his iPad and it’s asking for the activation lock and since it’s almost 3 years since we’ve needed it we can’t remember the Apple ID or password. Is there anyway to access his iPad even if we have to clear everything on it?

There is no way around unlocking Activation Lock without inserting the device’s associated Apple ID. If this is not an option you will have to find the original receipt for the device that clearly shows the serial number. Once you have this document you can have Apple unlock your iPad.
I am sorry, this will not suffice. The box is not sufficient proof of purchase. Unfortunately if you do not have the original proof of purchase there is nothing you, or Apple, can do to unlock Activation Lock.
I don’t have the original receipt but I have the original box and it has the serial number on it. Would that suffice? I assume I have to go to the Apple Store to get this done?
