The App Find instead Find My Iphone

I used to extensvely use the app Find my iphone to locate my family members, especially my young kids. I even used it on someone elses phone one evening when I though I had left my phone in a restaurant and even worse when I had my phone stolen in Barcelona I could use my friends phone to lock my phone.

Now with iOS 13 I find this app to be completely changed. How can I search like I used to? Do I/my kids have to agree with sharing their location with me? Does that mean they will always see where I am? And what happens if I want to use someone elses phone to search?

Hi.

First of all. I have tried to set up place sharing of my phone after creating family sharing. My one son could not see me until I had physically activated sharing in the Find My app despite trying to set it up when I created the family sharing under Settings/My name.

Second of all. If I put my phone in flight mode I cannot use his phone to log into Find My iphone which I would want to do if I cannot find my iphone. Or do you mean I have to use a computer to find it which would be really silly if I have just had it stolen on the beach and do not access to a computer there and then?

It was a lot easier before where I could just use Find My iphone to find my kids via there apple id and the one time I had my phone stolen. Things are not always better!

Hello younso and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you have some questions about certain changes to the Find My app under iOS 13.

In general, both parties will need to be sharing their location in order for others to be able to see where they are. The exception to this individual permissions issue would be if a Family Sharing group is set up. That would allow all family group members so see one another's location.

In order to track the location of a device without having access to another device singed in to the same apple ID, you would want to use a computer and access iCloud.com and search from there.

Cheers.
