upgrade from Yosemite 10.10.5 to El Capitan 10.11?

I'm running an iMac (21.5 in. Mid 2010)

3.06 GHz Intel core i3

4GB 1333 MHz DDR3

My current OS is 10.10.5 and I want to upgrade to the latest available OS for this iMac. In order to do that I guess I have to download the systems incrementally so the obvious next step is OS 10.11. I can't seem to find the right download because each time I try I get a message that it can't be installed on this computer. Help please!!!

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download High Sierra from the Mac App Store.

You don't need to and shouldn't upgrade incrementally. It takes longer and increases the chance of encountering trouble.
