When in full screen my cursor is unable to click things (it has no effect)

This is really killing me and I can't find a solution anywhere online. I cannot view many things full screen (like youtube) because I cannot click things like the settings or captions button. I am forced to press the escape button. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro. Thank you in advance!

Hello unndreuh,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like the cursor is unable to click things when apps are in full screen. I'll be happy to help in any way I can.

Here are some suggestions:

If it's only happening with YouTube videos, reach out to Google directly: Contact us - Google

Best regards.

Ive noticed this too recently. On my MacBook air, with Safari in fullscreen, if I play a Youtube video fullscreen, I cannot click on anything within the video (ad check boxes, play/pause, timeline etc) I have to hit f to take it out of fullscreen, then can click on the element, then f to go back into fullscreen. So annoying. workaround is to make sure safari is not fullscreen when using youtube.

Hi Apple Support and unndreuh.

I have the same issue. I've tried all your recommended solutions: I still have the issue. In YouTube full screen, the pointer remains a black arrow and doesn't change to a white pointing finger. The result is that the touchpad cannot be used to control the YouTube video. I have to use the escape key to go back to small screen before the white pointing finger will appear again. There is no solution offered on Google's help pages. It would be really useful if you Mac experts could just replicate this on your laptop and then figure it out for us :)

Not only YouTube it also does not appear to wrk in Netflix so I do not think it is the problem with Google but more with Apple. I have a late 2012 Mac book pro and I face the same problem where when the video goes to full screen all the controls cannot be pressed (not functioningl) till I press the escape button and go out of full screen. Would be lovely to hear any recommendations.

I've been having this exact same issue since updating to Catalina. I have a 2014 Macbook Pro and have never had this issue until recently. When in full screen on Netflix and YouTube the cursor can't click things and I have to click esc to be able to click anything. Have not seen any solutions online and this is the first forum where others are sharing the problem.

This is killing me! Please someone find a fix. Just got a brand new MacBook Pro 16in purchased Dec 2019. Others are having the issue on MacBooks as old as 2012. It's gotta be a software error somewhere. Most likely on Apple's end as it happens for me on YouTube and Netflix. Someone said it doesn't happen on Firefox which narrows the problem down to a Safari issue? Apple please help!!
