Why does my Music start playing automatically when I plug in headphones?

Ever since the iOS 13 update, whenever I plug in my headphones to make a call my Music app automatically starts playing music. How do I get it to stop?

Ive installed the bug fix update and I’ve even turned off all settings for the Music app and unchecked all the music folders in the app. I’ve tried everything.

It’s really annoying. Any ideas? Can’t find anyone else experiencing this.

I just want to make some points for Apple to understand how deeply frustrating this problem is for all of us:

  • For each time I plug in my earbuds to prepare for a call, music starts up
  • Upsettingly, sometimes this happens just as I'm about to dial a number
  • Car use is the worst, driving down the road, getting ready to make a call is a terrible distraction
  • Keep in mind, this is a SAFETY issue too (that's why I'm using earbuds)
  • Yes, it is a SAFETY problem
  • Only times I plug in earbuds will be to make calls or listen to music, admittedly
  • Understandably, we all recognize the problem, Apple, why can't you?
  • All of the time, this is how frequently it happens - ALL OF THE TIME
  • Possibly this is a convenience feature, but it is really an "inconvenience" issue too!
  • Please fix this APPLE!
  • Let's all make as much noise as we can about this!
  • Ending this problem would make me very happy

That's all I have to say in making my points. Does everyone get these points?

The workaround I relied on last time this happened works so well I didn’t even realize the bug was back until I happened to see the music app playing yesterday on my phone. It’s a ten minutes of silence “song” that is listed first alphabetically so that it will auto play. You can find and download it on Apple Music. It’s called Aaaaa very good song. It’s the only workaround to stop blasting music if you don’t want to delete the app. Not ideal and won’t address the battery drain, but it works great. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/itunes-download-chart-a-very-good-song-samir-mezrahi-iphone-apple-music-a7892286.html%3famp

This happened to me yet again today. Watched a webinar on my Macbook Pro with wireless earbuds. When it was over, I removed the earbuds and walked away from my computer. When I returned, Apple's Music app was playing through the earbuds, wasting their batteries. Seriously thinking about deleting Music as soon as I move all my music to another, better behaving app.

A year later and this still isn’t fixed. Both my wife and myself find ourselves frantically searching out our phones and trying to find where the music off button is situated to switch the thing off.

It’s more than annoying, it’s embarrassing in public situations. Our phones and devices are bought, with us as consumers, being able to control them to suit our needs. Not scrabbling around and having to hold the off button to switch the phone off, never sure when it’s going to happen again. Totally invasive, and truly rude of Apple to assume anyone wants this feature in the first place. I play music when I want to play music, not when Apple decide it’s ok to interrupt a funeral, a family meal, a wedding, a commute, a food shop, a conversation etc with their own stupid ideas and poor software.

Dear Apple, in return for the hundreds of pounds and dollars we give you, please allow us to own the bloody thing!

I have the same problem. Iphone 11, iOS 14/14.1. I don’t listen to music on my phone, however I downloaded a ringtone about 8 years ago. Every time I finish a call, that ringtone blares in my earpiece. I have to open iTunes icon, close it, swipe my phone to close open/used apps. This is what I’m doing. It just started in the past 2 weeks. Drives me crazy. Apple needs to fix this bug - and quickly!

i suppose the drumroll in this thread ends with upset rather than laughter ... ?

its the AI they baked into their software that causes this, I am certain of that.

show them you mean something to their bottom line, which the current trend appears to be $1k + for phones, thanks to Apple.

from my own experiences, other brands and software meets the majority of user base needs. next time i upgrade my mbp and iphone i will keep the big picture in mind and consider cost as well.

i have a 2 year old $1200 iphone in my hand that is telling me my battery capacity *** and Apple wants to charge me $70 to swap it out with a new phone/battery.

big picture: very overblown pricing, not too much value or delighters for that money.

so again, the best you can do is simply dont invest in the Apple ecosystem if you can at all help it.

Apple iPhone 7, iOS 13.7. (iOS 14.0.1 to install)

Apple AirPods Gen 2.

I just experienced this issue for the first time last night when sleeping and then again today while walking in an otherwise very quiet park at twilight surrounded by residential homes – so not good timing both times. I can't remember how I stopped it the first time, but didn't have the AirPods in the case. One was on the bedside shelf, and the other somewhere in my bed. Perhaps an AirPods bug triggered it if my body pressed against it - making it presume it was in my ear.

Just before the second time, I had invoked the Find My app to locate the AirPods, but the sound didn't play on them. The Find My app showed the sound was 'Pending'. This Find My app might not be relevant since it first occurred the night before I invoked it. Although, there is a difference: The first time I could stop the sound. For the second time, the AirPods were cased and in my pocket but I couldn't stop it till I returned home and turned off bluetooth – an inspiration from reading other users' experience. I did play with a bunch of other settings but suspect none of those made any differnce. Just like other users' experiences, I had no control over the auto-playing nor volume. It did seem that the phone in general was responding very slowly – that is, any adjustments to volume etc could be seen to occur in sequence about 30-60 seconds later, but ultimately the auto-play would continue and revert to full volume. I also note that the remaining battery power percentage was visibly dropping relatively quickly. At Settings => Battery the top power user apps had nothing to do with the issue (Last 24 hours showing top 3 as Quora 22%, Notes 13%, Measure 9% in my case).

In my case I had just recently started using Apple bluetooth Air buds (generation 2), so I expect the issue is caused by this bluetooth paired device. I don't use Pandora (not installed), nor Spotify (installed but never used recently). The only music app I use is Apple Music. I do often use the sound-related app myNoise which was probably open the first time, but not playing anything. The second time it wasn't playing and probably wasn't even launched. In either case, the music was being played from Apple Music.

After turning the bluetooth back on, the issue has not reoccured (1.5 hours and counting).

I'll install iOS 14.0.1 tonight. With hope, it will prevent further instances of this issue.

I have had the same problem. I reset my phone (iPhone X) three times back to factory settings over the past few months. I initially thought that it was a problem with one particular Bluetooth speaker (Sony) so I removed that from my bluetooth list after resetting the phone and it all worked fine. Until today, when I turned off Bluetooth and turned it back on, connected my watch (which has never been a problem) and now Music will randomly start playing. I am not sure if it is due to the recent software update, which I installed yesterday. Either way, there has to be a solution to this that doesn't involve stripping all the data from the phone. If anyone has a solution, I would love to hear it!

What worked for me was to uninstall Music app.

Other users have found that when they uninstall Music app, another app will kick in, such as Spotify. I have not noticed this to be a problem.

The downside is obviously that you cannot play music anymore on your phone. That's a pretty big drawback for me, but it was worth it. For the music start automatically after a bluetooth connection has been established is not acceptable and not something I can compromise on.

Why does my Music start playing automatically when I plug in headphones?
