I thank everyone for their helpful replies. I returned to the shop to day and an assistant connected my SSD to the iPad Pro 11. I have FAT32 which is fine but the SSD is USB 3 and not USB C like the iPad. All the files were visible in the iPad File but we didn’t manage to see all of the contents of a very large file we opened. Unlike my laptop downloading was quite slow. As MS Office may not have been installed we were unable to open a word document to see whether it would be possible to work on it. I have to return to the shop on Monday to see the technician who was absent today.

many thanks for your rapid reply. I believe the drive is FAT32 but can’t find mention of it in their specs. There are a couple articles in Google which say not to use it and Apple is not on Samsung’s list of compatible devices. I have just ordered this iPad for travel at the beginning of next week and all my documents are on this drive so I hope it is going to work as it does on both my PC and nine month old iMac desktop vis the normal USB 3.0
