Have you tried leaving all the connections connected into the adapter and simply unplug and re-plug the adapter into tbe iPad?
What about leaving the adapter and connections plugged in and do hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?
My experience with non-genuine Apple adapters is that most do not work, but it is next to impossible now to find Apple's own genuine original 30 pin to Digital AV adapter as these have been counterfeited, as well and usually do not work.
Apple no longer sells this video adapter, either, any longer.
So, there exists the possibility that your third party, non-Apple video adapter simply just will not work.
