Apple Arcade Free Trial Problem

I'm not sure where else I heard about it, and I cannot find a particular reference in an Apple support document, but it is clear from the cancellation dialog that the trial service will cease if you cancel the free trial. "Your service ends immediately if you cancel your trial". Choices are Back and Cancel Free Trial, far enough away from each other so you shouldn't be able to make a mistake.

This is what happens (it's the same with Apple Music) - if you cancel having subscribed, access continues until the end of the subscription month: but if you cancel during the free trial you lose access immediately. I found the following image on this gadjethacks.com page:

It does apply with Apple Music, but at least they make it clear:

As far as I am aware Apple Music and other free trials in the Apple ecosystem remain active until the prospective renewal date when the first charge would be taken. Apple Arcade is being treated differently in this respect which is catching people out.

Ah, in which case that is perhaps a relatively recent change of policy. (March 2019?) I know when I started my Apple Music trial I cancelled the automatic renewal immediately, then enabled it again before the trial ended so I could continue using it.
