Notes not syncing or uploading to iCloud After iOS 13 Update

I'm having an issue where, after updating my devices to iOS 13, notes from the Apple Notes app are either not syncing, randomly syncing, or syncing only after a prolonged delay (e.g. days) between my iPhone and iPad. I've tried signing out and back in to iCloud and have removed and reinstalled the Notes app on both devices. I've ensured that the OS on both devices has been updated to the current version. Interestingly, If I have the notes app open on my iPhone, I still get the notification in the dock on my iPad that the notes app is open on my phone, but the notes still fail to sync, or at best, some notes randomly sync hours or days later, between the two devices. I noticed that if I create a note in the notes app through the iCloud website, the note downloads to both my devices immediately, but notes created on my devices fail to upload.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution? Is this a known bug in iOS 13, similar to one with the Reminders app (which I don't seem to be having)?

Hi all,

I have resolved the issue.

I have had the same problem as everyone  - Notes not syncing between my iPhone, iPad, MBA - all with the latest OS. I tried everything recommended and ended transferring all my notes to sit on my iPhone - then deleted all notes out of the iPad and MBA and switched iCloud off for Reminders and Notes on all three devices.

I then backed up my phone so at least I had a copy of my notes (I used iexplorer to look into the backup to make sure all of my Notes were there).

I periodically switched iCloud back on in the iPad and iPhone and attempted to create notes and see if they would sync. They did not. My wife created a note on her phone and shared it with me - and that synced as we both made changes, although it was not instant as it had been prior to the iOS upgrades.

So until yesterday things were still not working.

Then I did the following:

  • switched off iCloud again on all devices.
  • deleted all notes on the iPad, MBA and deleted any notes in the 'recently deleted folder'.
  • logged into the iCloud account to access Notes via the browser and deleted all notes/folders - including notes in the recently deleted folder.
  • The only notes left were the 480 notes I'd transferred to the 'On my iPhone' folder on my iPhone. If you don't have this option in Notes you have to go to Settings/Notes and switch it on.
  • Then I did this (this is what I think resolved the issue). I went to Settings/Passwords & Accounts/iCloud/iCloud/Manage Storage - and I looked down the list to see how much data Notes had stored in iCloud (obviously it should be zero as I had deleted all Notes out of iCloud). It was 2.2GB - ranked 5th after iCloud Drive, Photos, Messages, Backups. Obviously something was jammed in there.
  • So I swiped left and the option comes up to Delete Data. I hit that option and I think it says 'This will delete all Notes in iCloud and on you iPhone' - I say yes or OK or whatever it asked. It didn't delete the Notes I had 'On my IPhone' - but I guess it deleted whatever was stuck in iCloud.
  • I waited for 30 minutes. Then switched on iCloud on my phone, and tested making notes on my phone, and in iCloud via the browser and it all synced immediately. I then added my iPad - and the same - all synced immediately - then added my MBA and notes synced immediately between all four. I then copied a folder from my 'On my iPhone' folder - to the iCloud folder - and it immediately synced the folder and all the notes it contained between all my phone, iPad, MBA and iCloud. I then copied all the folders - and all other notes have now synced between all devices. Each account has 480 notes.
  • If you are going to follow these instructions the only thing I would do differently is use my MBA to hold all the notes in the 'On My Mac' folder. If you don't have this folder you have to switch it on in Preferences. It is easier to use a mouse to move folders around.

I'll report back if I have any problems, but it seems I have resolved this issue.

Good luck all.

Yes.

Not syncing from iPhone (iOS 13.1.3) to iCloud until I (force) restart or reboot the phone, or switch it off completely.

I never work online in iCloud (Safari), so I don't have any thoughts on that, but up from Mac (Mojave) works, i.e. the notes sync TO iPhone and iPad. Usually this does not last, however.

Today I noticed in the Notes app on the phone, on the Folders page, the spinnig would not stop (not after disconnecting wifi, restarting the app) until a reboot. Then some short spinning, on the Mac as well, and all was synced again, both ways.

After this, I checked up/down sync on iPad (iOS 12) and that is also working as it should.

(I don't know if the spinning was not there before, I just noticed it today, but I am pretty sure that never happenend before. There was some spinning in the Mac app a few weeks ago, intermittent but continuing, and that went away after logging out of iCloud, maybe not related. Logging out the iPhone did not solve anything, only tried it once, a while ago.)

This is unbelievable!!

I have been a huge fan of Apple products for many years because the software solutions were always simple and elegant.

But what is this?? My notes are essential for my work and life! I have already wasted several days trying to fix this notes synchronisation issue, having done everything I can think of (and all of the mentioned suggestions in this post, thank you everyone) and also talking to Apple support (the person was not even aware of the issue!). Nothing fixed it!

I am sorry to say this but Apple should be very ashamed for releasing software that breaks down people's work flow completely!!

I migrated my notes and task manager away from the Apple iCloud Eco-system about two weeks now because of the issues. Mainly because Apple not even acknowledged the problem or provided a ETA for a fix. It is over 20 days.

Not only did some notes not sync, also parts of some of the synced notes where missing (tables, pictures, hand-written notes etc. It is amazing how bad Apple responds to these issues (I mean no response at all).

Who would have expected this. I am even considering to migrate the remaining service like iCloud Storage, Photos and whatever I can to use other Cloud Service (AWS, Microsoft, Google, Box).

Are you sure this icon is not just telling you that this particular note has an attachment of some type, rather than being pure text?

In general, for me, my situation has removed the same - since the Catalina update (and not the iOS 13 update) modification to notes, or new notes, in 'Notes' on my two MacBook Pros and on my iPhone do not get uploaded to iCloud. But things work the other way. So I am now trying to working always from Notes in the iCloud interface. Any changes I make in the web interface DO sync, virtually immediately, to my MacBook Pros and my iPhone. But it is irritating to have to work like this.

I’m not sure what this icon is telling me. I know that it doesn’t exist on any notes pre-Catalina upgrade, it only appears when an update has been synced from another device, I can only see it on the iCloud web interface and not in notes on my Mac or on my phone. I do know however that I have not added any attachments to this note, all I have done is type text into the notes on one of my devices. To me it looks like some sort of control character that is getting added by the sync process. What it means is a mystery to me, I’ve tried googling the image to see if anyone’s had anything similar anywhere else and had no hits or matches.

Referring to my solution to this problem I posted on this forum a few days ago.

All problems are gone on my machines. I can write/edit/change notes on either iPad/iPhone/Mac mini and they will sync perfectly.

It's important to erase all your notes, then restore them from a backup.

I actually was more or less forced to try the backup route because the Catalina upgrade erased several of my notes.

I signed out of iCloud and back in again - still having issues with notes - have to say anything like signing in/out and reinstalling is very time consuming particularly when you have a family; it's time I just don't have.

I don't have to time to re-input notes, and I have to say the helpdesk could try reading some of these issues. I'm not sure it will be fixed, because they are still saying they think it is a problem with my iphone, it took me to look on here to realise that it is a consistent problem since the update.

Just for fun, I logged into iCloud (Safari, Mojave), and it does not refresh/push changes/updates to the browser page.

I restarted the iPhone earlier, and syncing still works all around, so I made a note in Notes on the Mac and deleted it on the phone. The iPad was immediate, as was the Notes app on the Mac, but I had to refresh the web page to see the changes.

What I find strange is that I see a spinning wheel in the web interface, but nothing happens until I manually press the circular refresh arrow in the Safari search field.

Hello, All - None of these fixes work ... they are just band aids so do NOT waste your time deleting notes, re-adding, turning things on and off. The problem is an Apple problem. I had a good call with Apple yesterday. The guy wanted me to do the normal power on, power off, reboot, copy, paste, on and on. I told him no way was I going to waste time doing that. He escalated my call to a nice lady who DID confirm they are aware of this and the problem is on their side. But Chengera is right: keep calling Apple, do NOT waste time with the usual things and tell them this is a known issue and it's driving you crazy. The more calls the better. There was an article or two on this. A little bad PR in the news will certainly get Apple's attention! So, switch apps to something else ... or be patient for an Apple update coming (we can all hope) soon. Here is that article: https://www.ibtimes.com/ios-13-causing-another-issue-apples-latest-updates-could-not-fix-it-2850686

AppleCare support suggested that I create a new user test account on my Mac to test iCloud notes. Once I created the test account, I turned on iCloud but just Notes. For some reason the new account forced all of the notes I had typed on my Mac to sync with iCloud. For the last few hours, everything has been syncing between my devices and iCloud.

Creating a test user account might be an easy thing to try out...

Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way.

Didnt work for me. Nothing is syncing. No notes at all... I’ve tried everything over the last two weeks... I feel like I have thousands of dollars worth of useless equipment. I could have gotten a cheap PC and google docs.

horrible. Seems like it’s only effecting a small percentage of people and it’s not worth Apple’s time to provide us with support.
