Google apps won't work

It seems that google apps (currently chrome browser and WhatsApp for desktop) won't work on my MacBook Pro.

WhatsApp stuck looking for a QR code, and google chrome is stuck on the opening page, not able to switch to any other url.

I thought it might have something to do with software update, but when clicking on software updates in system preferences it says I'm not connected to the internet even though safari works just fine.

anyone had a similar issue?
