Hi. Since upgrading to macOS Catalina, my Messages notifications do not show the contact name. I have the message preview turned off in System Preferences-> Notifications-> Messages. I had this turned off in macOS Mojave as well but contact names did show without the message. But now contact name is also now showing.
This may sound a little crazy, but I was frustrated by same issue.
The Fix for me -- Quit Contacts (yes Contacts) and reopen Contacts.
Go to iMessage and contact photos appear.
They appear to be tied - one being broke, breaks the other.

Can confirm that I am also having this issue. Only way to fix it is to say that you want to show the full message in the notification.
It's not contact photos not appearing that's the issue... it's that the notifications for incoming messages don't show the names when preview is turned off. They have in every version of MacOS prior.
Same issue for me - and it's driving me nuts . I see a phone number and contact photo (if I have a contact photo in my Contacts), but no name listed.
I'm hoping it'll be fixed in an update, but how do we let Apple know? I actually had to do a command line fix for a different bug after upgrading to Catalina. If one is available for this issue, I really hope someone can chime in. I may truly go nuts before this is fixed.
Even if this is being billed as a "security feature" it doesn't make sense that the behavior doesn't match that of the iPhone. At least put an option in the notifications preferences whether or not we want the name to show up!

yessssssssss. this is driving me nuts.
Apple should give Mac OS users the options to show Messenger notification 1) without name and text content, 2) with name and not content, 3) with name with first line of text, etc.
Same thing happening to me! The image works however and their intials show up if there is no image associated with the contact, which is a little helpful but the name would be best for sure!
Updated to 10.15.2 and this bug is still not fixed.
What is Apple doing? This is not the Apple we know.
This is very frustrating to me as well. I would love to have more options, as we have previously had. I'm posting in hopes apple changes this.

Same "issue" here, albeit I'm sure Apple will say it's an improvement! I want to know who is messaging me but I don't want the text to show up. My iPhone works this way. My Mac has always worked this way. But with Catalina, all I get is a generic Messages notification as detailed here. Apple, please fix!
