Slow user switching

Fast-user switching has become slow (15s freeze) since I moved to Catalina.

I frequently switch between 2 user accounts. Switching under Mojave was reasonably fast. But under Catalina, the machine freezes literally for about 15 seconds. With either the color wheel spinning, or the spinning gear freezing (if the login screen is displayed).

I have a mid-2018 MacBook Pro 13" with 4 cores, so the age of the computer should not be the issue.

I respectfully disagree the problem has not been fixed, unless you count yourself of the privileged class of Betafites. Until a complete publicly available update is published the problem remains just that a problem. Apple should never have released such buggy first generation OS, in years past they would never have published an OS this badly constructed. I have been a Mac person back to the Macintosh SE. Jobs RIP was at times a tyrant in his perfection, but he was right. If they had released this in the early days we would be calling MS Support today

I've been with Apple a long time too, but I feel like you've either got a bad memory or have been exceptionally lucky over the years. New OS releases - both OS X, and iOS since that's been around - have been notoriously buggy in varying degrees over the years, and there was always the advice to wait until the third service release (.3) before installing. What's changed is that these days people mass upgrade on release day because it's free (remember back when you had to pay for OS upgrades?) and yay new features. Apple hasn't changed nearly as much as people think it has. Nothing feeds nostalgia more than a faulty memory.

Late to this party, but thank you to all the bleeding edge users who help identify the early bugs, so those of us who prefer to wait for .2 iterations can live more sanely. ;-)

For those who get frustrated, join the beta party (so you can really experience bugs), or wait for an update or two BEFORE updating to a new OS, and only then after reading what kinds of issues you might run into when you do.

I also encourage folks to test upgrading with a backup version of their drive; in addition to a TimeMachine backup, I have an external SSD that is a clone of my internal, which is my quick safety net, letting me keep running easily if there is a problem with my main Mac. This can be upgraded as a test machine, with TimeMachine being my secondary safety net. But even then, don't rush into it blindly. For example, if you update Reminders, even on a clone, if you are iCloud connected, my understanding is you may not be able to go back. So you might even consider testing with a different iCloud account.
