books error "There is a problem with iTunes (--42408)"

On upgrading to Catalina, I don't seem to be able to open books (in Books) previously purchased in iBooks.

The error message is "This book can’t be opened. There is a problem with iTunes (--42408). Reinstall iTunes, then try again."

The button suggest to 'get iTunes' leading to a page asking to 'upgrade to Catalina'...

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, federicogg!

I understand you're not able to open a book that you previously purchased from iBooks. I'd be happy to provide information to help you troubleshoot.

Try deleting the book: Read books and more with Apple Books

"Delete a book

After you delete a book, it won't be stored on your device, but it's still available in your library on other devices. If you want to remove the book from your library, you can hide it.

How to delete books, audiobooks, or PDFs from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap Library, then find the item.
  2. Tap the More button  underneath the item. If the item is part of a series, first open the series, then tap the More button .
  3. Choose Remove.
  4. To remove the item from your device, choose Remove Download. (If the item is a PDF or didn't come from the Book Store, tap Delete Everywhere to delete it from your library.)

How to delete books, audiobooks, or PDFs from your Mac

  1. Click Library at the top of the window, then click All Books in the sidebar.
  2. Control-click or right-click the item.
  3. If the item is part of a series, first open the series, then control-click or right-click the book.
  4. Choose Delete.
  5. When prompted, choose Delete from the window that appears.

If you don't see Delete after you right-click or control-click an item, that item isn't downloaded to your device."

Then, redownload it and test to see if you're able to open it: Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books

"How to redownload books and audiobooks on a Mac

  1. Open Apple Books. Sign in with the same Apple ID that you originally used to purchase the item.
  2. Click Book Store.
  3. Under Quick Links, click Purchased.
  4. If you use Family Sharing, you can choose a family member's name next to Purchased to see their purchases.
  5. Click "Not in My Library" to view purchased content that isn't on your computer.
  6. Find the book that you want to download, then click the download button  in the corner. Don't see the item that you purchased?"
