AppleScript-Created Apps Are Not Running on macOS 10.15 Catalina

Why do my AppleScript-created apps not run on macOS 10.15 Catalina?

I’m wondering if they were saved as 32-bit apps. They’re no more than Apps I’ve created for personal use. But they just don’t run. And I created them using Mojave on my 64-bit Mac.

I've noticed that about half my Applescript applications are 32 bit (I'm on Mavericks so it's academic).

Solved!

I eMailed myself the AppleScript, basically using eMail as a clipboard..

  1. I got the AppleScript from the 32-bit Mac
  2. eMailed myself the AppleScript
  3. Pasted the AppleScript on the 64-bit Mac
  4. Saved it

Now it works.

So, try this on your apps, and see how it goes.

Your method isn't really applicable as I don't have Catalina. What I tried was to open a 32 bit app in the Applescript Editor and 'Save as' as an application to a different location (to retain the name). That resulted in a 64 bit app. I suppose i should work through all of my scripts and do it with the 32 bit ones (though there are 140 scripts altogether). I wish there was a quicker way of checking the version than using System Information. - actually it occurs to me that by sorting the scripts folder by date modified and spot-checking to find the date at which they start being 64 bit I then just modify all the preceding scripts. That's about half of them...

Just checked that - the changeover came for me between February and April 2010 - don't know why, it wasn't on getting a new Mac so I suppose it was a system upgrade: that would be from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It's about 40 scripts so I ought to get round to it... some day...

As to a quick check, if an app is 64 bit, 'Get Info' offers the option to open in 32 bit. If it isn't, it doesn't. Now I need a batch method...

Incidentally the email trick doesn't work on the same Mac with Mavericks, presumably because it will handle 32 bit. Atsat present I wouldn't touch Catalina with the proverbial bargepole, I can't try that one out.

Using VMWare Fusion (Mac-on-Mac):

You got me wondering: Would a 32-bit Virtual Machine(VM) of Mojave be an option to run on my Catalina-Installed Mac.

Circrmstacially, I don’t think I’ve created a VM yet, of a Mac-on-a-Mac. But, I wonder if that’d be a work around to all of this. I’d open the ports (FTP and ICMP) and see if I could access the 32-bit apps on it.
