Night shift for New OS Catalina

Hi,

I am using the Macbook Air 13'' (Early 2015 Verson). I just update the OS to Catalina (10/09/2019). However, the night shift doesn't work. Is this a OS bug? Or, it is just not working in my mac.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Baicheng0038!

I understand you're unable to use Night Shift on your MacBook Air. I'd be happy to provide information to help you troubleshoot.

Make sure you're setting up Night Shift correctly: How to use Night Shift on your Mac

If after setting it up correctly, you're still not seeing Night Shift turn on, test to see if it works correctly in another user account:

+1 as I have this problem too on my 2012 MBP A1278 i7.

Testing the feature on another user bore the same results, Night Shift just wouldn't change the screen color, even though it says that it is active. Also, 3rd Party Program f.lux won't have any effect either.

I've also tried to manually correct the screen's color temperature using screen calibration assistant, but no dice there. No matter what I do, none of the sliders would change the screen's settings. It's almost as if Catalina didn't provide the proper drivers/kexts to access the hardware and change the screen's color temperature accordingly.

There are strong indications (no Night Shift, f.lux not working, screen calibration without effect) that this, indeed, is a OS issue.

Ever since Night Shift was introduced, I have not been able to make it work. It's been a few macOS versions since then and it's always the same: if I want Night Shift, I have to go turn it on manually. Custom schedule doesn't work, sunset to sunrise doesn't work.

Location services is turned on, as that would be a reasonable explanation for why Night Shift would not know when the sun sets and rises.

Instead what we are left with, is that our Mac cannot handle something as complex as changing the display light at certain intervals.

As mentioned, this is across several versions of macOS.

I honestly find it baffling how something like this can persist in macOS. Sigh.
