Add music to 1st gen ipod shuffle

Asking in October 2019, is it still possible for me to add music to my first gen iPod Shuffle? I am running 10.14.6 on a 2017 Macbook Pro. I've got the newest version of iTunes, but it seems like whenever I try to drag and drop or import music to the iPod, it freezes for a sec, then doesn't add or give me any sort of error message. Anything else I should try or anything I should do differently?
