Sorting Apple Music Playlists By Date Added in Catalina

It wouldn't be a true upgrade without Apple removing things users have grown to rely on...

I'd like to sort the songs in my playlists by the date they were added. Specifically the "Recently Added" playlist. This option seems to have been removed. If someone knows a way to restore this feature I would love to hear how.

HI Steve, I was facing the same issue after upgrading to Catalina.. but I found the solution, I hope it will solve yours. Select the smart playlist you want to fix, go to View/as songs.. after that go again to View/Show View Options or cmd+J .. you will find the Date added check box.

Hi, Steve!

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. If I understand your post, you're looking for the Recently Added playlist, which would sort your music by the most recently added. I'm happy to help!

This playlist can be found in the Music app under the Library section of the sidebar to the left. You can view a picture and get more information on the sidebar here: View your devices in the sidebar in Music on Mac - Apple Support.

Best!

I'll try one more time... Go to File, New Smart Playlist, set the criteria to only show songs from the past few weeks. When you do that it used to sort newest to oldest. Perfect, exactly what I want. That is no longer the case after Catalina. However in iOS the same playlist shows newest to oldest. This is different from EVERY other playlist. They all match from computer to phone except this one.

Thank you for your reply. Let me try and explain.

There is a smart playlist in iTunes (now Apple Music) that has recently added songs from the past few weeks. That playlist used to be sorted by Date Added, newest to oldest. That is no longer the case and I cannot find a way to sort it that way. Sorting options are as follows: Playlist Order, Name, Genre, Year, Artist, Album, Time.

In the past there was an option for Date Added. That's what I want. That appears to not be an option anymore. The default sorting order from this same playlist on my phone is exactly what I want: Date Added, newest first.

If you're talking about the Recently Added playlist in the sidebar under Library, this one can't be sorted and it will always show the newest song in album view on top. That's how it was in the latest iTunes 12.9 and it is now the same in Music app, at least on my machine. I recommend instead creating a smart playlist and name it Recently Added, set it up to sort by Date added, add another line and specify your date range and it will do just that. The unfortunate part is that you need to be in Song view to have these options available, switching the playlist to Album view eliminates the Date added sorting. Please report your issue to www.apple/feedback.

Hi Timbuktu

I dont think you understood the issue correctly. I do the same sorting as Steve i.e Adding a SMART playlist called recently added with 'rules' set as - Any song with 'Date Added' in the last 6 months and i sort that Smart Playlist by 'Date Added' under 'Song' view as you mentioned.

Although, for me the problem is somewhat different. I see that same smart playlist in the correct order in Music App on Macbook just like how i want. But once i sync that Smart Playlist to the phone, the same Smart playlist has completely random order and not sorted by Date Added anymore on the phone.

I tried everything - recreating the playlist, copying to so called 'Play Order' and then resyncing it to the phone; alas nothing worked.

Kindly advise how can this be fixed as this issue only happened after CATALINA was installed. So far ios Sync is nothing but a huge mess for people like me who are not Apple Music users and rely on their own large collection of music for past multiple years.

In my 100+ playlists, I rely on song list view, and often sort by song rating. After updating, every one of my playlists has reverted back to "Playlist" view, and all of the categories I use, such as song rating, date added, genre, track number, etc. have been removed. All I can seem to do is go through each playlist one by one, change view as songs, then add my columns back individually, for EACH playlist. This is really frustrating.
