Hello Wilson1002,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue with speakerphone calls, and I'd like to do what I can to help out.

Are you using a case on your iPhone? If so, remove the case and test. If a case is not fitting correctly, it can cause issues with the speaker and microphone.

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker has some additional troubleshooting steps.

Cheers!

Wow. cdp1030, we can't believe it, but yes - that fix is working, at least so far. Cannot thank you enough, this has been a torment. Fingers crossed the solution will last.

Obviously it's a limitation not to be able to access other apps while using the speakerphone, and will require a fix. But it beats having the person one is on the phone with hear every word they speak from their end echoing back to them at top volume.

I've been following this thread for months. I think I've found the solution (for me, at least). I bought the Apple case and it seems to have fixed it. It leaves the mic and speaker completely open. (I noticed when the case was off it didn't echo. I also noticed that when the case was off and the bottom was touching my sweatshirt it echoed). I don't love the way it kind of leaves the bottom a little more vulnerable, but it seems to have done the trick. It's worth $40 at least to see if that's the issue.

Good luck...

I'm pleased if a case change has solved the issue for this user. However, we have anecdotal evidence in 2 situations where the problem has persisted - egregiously - one with an iPhone 11 and an Apple silicone case (the kind where the ther is no crossbar on the bottom near the speakers), and one with no case at all (but it does have a screen protector.

The most successful strategies I've seen to date are to a) quit all other apps on the phone prior to making or taking a call (this has worked to our amazement in several instances) and b) keep the base of the phone away from the palm, parts of the hand, or any flat surface or base or charging station. Annoyingly, holding the phone upside down and speaking into it as if it were a handheld mike seems to work best.

We have not tested this with FaceTime - the upside-down technique would likely yield questionable results.

PS We have -not- seen this problem on any iPhone 11 Pros.

It's quite probable that case design is one of the sound-reflective surfaces that is exacerbating this problem, but the problem is NOT a iphone case issue alone.

If it were, there would be a simple way to test it:

  1. Remove the phone case
  2. See if the problem persists

... which it does in several anecdotal tests we have run here.

We have had some succcesses by altering the position used to hold the phone - echoes off the surface of a hand holding the phone at the base seem to be a factor, or echoes from laying the phone flat on a surface (likely two of the more common methods of speaking on a smartphone).

One solution has been to manually hold the phone elevated in the air with the bottom of the phone pointed skyward, and speaking into it that way. Far from a utilitarian solution.

The closest I have found to a more practical solution has already been posted here - to manually close all other apps while on the phone. In several of our tests, this has resolved the problem.

This is just my opinion, but I am convinced this is an inherent design flaw built into the 11 (non-Pro) series.
