I have an ipod touch and wondered if I need to get a separate virus protection, other than the one that is already on my mac. If so, I have never spotted a virus protection application at the iTune Store.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8), ipod touch

    Hello kcsunny,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!

As I'm sure others will state, there is no such need for any virus protection software. There are no viruses to be worried about.

There are no viruses that affect the iphone/ipod os.

and it would be very difficult for anyone to sneak a virus onto an iPod, unless the iPod has been jailbroken, since all apps can only be loaded from the iTunes Store and Apple examines submitted apps pretty carefully. In addition, apps run in a "sandbox" that has very restricted access to the rest of the iPod, making any malware very difficult to actually do anything.

    So not to worry.

    Regards.

I sure hope your responders are correct--for today I got a bunch of messages on my iPod Touch saying that it had been infected by 5 viruses, etc. etc. It then said I should download a correction, but this did not "take" because it is a Windows correction.

I believe this was just one of those messages that I used to see rather more often on my Macs, but which were basically frauds. I sure hope so, at least. I've been a bit afraid to connect the iPod Touch to my computers, however, until I am a bit more sure.

(No, my iPod Touch has not been hi-jacked. I have kept it up to date except for the very latest
upgrade, which I haven't installed because I still cannot determine whether I have a 1st or 2d generation Touch--another thread, another problem.)

I have no idea about the messages.

Those messages are frauds. There are currently no viruses in the wild that affect iOS or the Mac OS. Your Touch is fine.

Meg is wrong. Viruses do exist. You are unlikely to get them however so no virus checker is needed

Thank you for this answer. I have always believed the same, but I do use Virus Barrier on my two other computers. And this software has reported one or two viruses, probably affecting Windows machines. (I have set my preferences to search for these as well, since I don't want my Windows friends to become infected.)

But I am now going to see if I can connect the iPodTouch, and then do a scan of only that portion.

As you can see, this is not my "cup of tea", and I'm a bit slow. (My excuse--almost 68 years. Just an excuse, but....)

But thanks so much to all of you for your input. I'll keep this posted.

There's no viruses for Mac and iOS, but if you done something illegal like jailbreaking it, you can get one (because of the hacker)
  • Alinde Omalley Level 1 (20 points)
as I said before, I've done nothing illegal. I would not know how to do so even if I wanted to.

While it make void your warranty, jailbreaking is NOT illegal.

where did u get the idea that jailbreaking is ILLEGAL??
  • Lucasdms Level 1 (140 points)
Sorry, it's not illegal. But it violates your warranty...

juniperpansy, I haven't done any big research, but I can't think of a time I ever knew Meg to be wrong. Do you have any documentation about ipod virus'?

Just curious - trying to get information - not put you on the spot or anything.
