Activity Monitor

I usually use Activity monitor to watch the use of RAM. After Catalina the the Process manager column has got a HUGE width! I have to slide a long way from the left side where I find the names of the apps and VERY FAR RIGHT I can see the data.

This seems to be the same sad story as with Mail.

Any solution to the problem?

Nils1406,

Glad to hear that the resizing is working as it should now since you installed the supplemental update. For your Mail concerns, have you tried turning off the "Show Side Preview" option? If you go to the menu bar and select View > Show Side Preview, deselect the option. When that's done, the mail is listed at the top with the preview at the bottom, which you can adjust the size of. I hope this is helpful.

Have a great day!

Hello, and good morning (as it is just now where I am...)

It has been stated that Apple don't follow discussions on this - their own - forum. I find that difficult to believe. Anyway, the best we can do, is to report to Apple on their own Feedback forum. Here is the link: Product Feedback - Apple

On this forum you can go to the Mac itself or to apps. Just roll down and you can see all the different links you can go into. My suggestion is that you all send in your complaints to as many different forums as possible. I have sent in complaint to MacBook and to Photos and to Mail, and I will continue to do so.

So let them hear it as often as possible from us!

Hello Nils1406!

Thanks for reaching out here on the Apple Support Communities! I see that you're Activity Monitor and Mail windows are able to be resized, but when you quit the app and return to it, the window size is reverting back to the way it was before resizing it. If this is correct,  let’s begin with some basic troubleshooting, and then work our way toward more complex seps. This will help us to isolate the issue further with the app windows resizing:

1 - Quit all the apps you have running.

2 - Restart your iMac: Go to the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen > Restart.

3 - If the issue persists after restarting, restart again. This time you'll boot into safe mode and test again: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

4 - If still occurring in safe mode you’ll need to create a new user and test it out again. This article will show you how: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

If you still are experiencing the same issues with the app windows not retaining the size you've changed them to, or if you’re seeing any error messages, let us know.  Also let us know if it is isolated to Activity Monitor and Mail or if there are any other apps affected.

Cheers!

Hello Sterling R,

Firs of all - thank you for your replay.

Strangely enough - i quit and restartedActivity monitor many times, without result, so I just forgot for some days. Thanks to your reply to me I started it again and tried to adjust the column with - and ALAS! It worked. and without going into safe mode. It may have to do with the last update.

Anyway - it works.

The problem with Mail is more serious, as Apple have dropped the possibility to tick off "Classic view". I sincerely hope they will give us that possibility again, so I will be able to personalise my Mail.

Thanks, Chris_g1.

My problem is a bit different, as it is for very many, too, according to the forum. I misstate possibility of getting the "classic" view back, which gives me the possibility to adjust the columns in the top view in Mail. Now I only have one very wide column, and in the left corner I can choose to have the mails sorted by different criteria. That is Ok, but a giant step backwards, as I was able to have all the columns I wanted, and not only the one.

You can look into the discussion on Mail if this is new to you.

Cheers.

I (just now) dragged the Activity Monitor 'page' across to the left of the screen, as far as it would go, then repeated that, two or three times, across the huge 'Process Name' column, until I reached the other columns, followed by the RH edge of the page. I then physically clicked and held on to the right-hand 'boundary-line' of the Process Name column; and dragged it to the left, thus significantly reducing that column width, thereby bring the other columns into view (with the LH side of the page meeting the LH edge of the screen / same for RH side). I then quit Activity Monitor, opened it back up again; and 'Voila' - back to 'normal' (for now).

Cheers, Dave.

Same here. I've allowed myself to be led into repeating a 'two-second' drag thing, each time I open. It won't let me 'double-click' on the RH edge of the column, to 'self-close', either. So I'm just repeating the above, till they do something about it, hopefully 'sooner-rather-than-later'. In the meantime, two seconds of my time isn't a bad price to pay, to remind me that 'they are not perfect'... ;)

Cheers, Dave.
