So, this is the seventh time I've tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. I've tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do? I've already called Apple and don't have access to a store. I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error. Very frustrating.

Anyone have the same problem? Suggestions?

I'm having the same problem everyone else is reporting with the upgrade timing out 2/3 of the way through. I've tried all the things recommended on the Apple site, from deleting software, trying another computer, etc. This is very frustrating and yet another black eye for Apple.

I'm using my Macbook and Mac Mini to try and upgrade.

I'd recommend people hold off on upgrading to 4.1.

Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

I'm back from the store.

"Ed" diagnosed the Error Code 9 issue as "Stuck in Endless Restore Loop."

New iPhone 4 in my hands. (and yes, the front is a lighter shade of black... very noticeable.)

I don't think the issue has anything to do with USB, regardless of the code it threw. If you read the log, you see it hangs on contacting Apple servers... so I agree, it may just be a server issue.... but I was not taking any chances. Too much stuff going on right now to not have a phone for a day.

Thank you to Ed at the Maine Mall store.
