So, this is the seventh time I've tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. I've tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do? I've already called Apple and don't have access to a store. I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error. Very frustrating.

Anyone have the same problem? Suggestions?

Hey guys I just downloaded the new iOS 4.0.1 and for some reason iTunes tells me that I have to restore my iPhone, so i agree and click on Restore but it fails and it keeps asking me to restore the iPhone but it never completes, now my iPhone is useless and I can't seem to restore it to it's previous working stage.

I read somewhere to delete the . i p s w file in the Library folder and to re-download the iOS 4.0.1 again, I hope this works because now I can't even play World of Warcraft as my authenticator is installed on the iPhone.

This is a nightmare, what else can I do to get my iphone back to normal, now I don't care for the update!

Here's the fix. Since most of you jailbroke your prior phones, see the following solution..

I kept getting iTunes error 3014 right at the end of the firmware installation on the phone, so I spent hours troubleshooting using what I found on Apple's site and on the web. The last thing I tried, and the ultimate solution for me was to go into the hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts-open with Notepad) and delete the 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com IP address-Saurik's server (IIRC, added to enable restore of 3GS after jailbreaking). I thought I'd have to hunt down another gs.apple.com IP address and write it in place of Saurik's IP address, or that iTunes would write it, but neither occurred, and my iPhone 4 restored to new without a problem after deleting that IP address and saving the file.
