State sales tax for Florida added to itunes apple music bill in October 2019.

Why did Apple charge state and local sales tax to my itunes apple music bill? Last month and previous billing did not have these charges.

Also, does this apply to Spotify music service? If not, then its time to switch to them. Pretty much the same music service. Nickel and dime us to death. Really???

Apple is collecting the Communications Services Tax (CST) not Sales Tax. This is a different rate at both state and local levels. State rate is at https://floridarevenue.com/taxes/taxesfees/Pages/cst.aspx and you can look up your local rate at https://pointmatch.floridarevenue.com/General/CommunicationsServicesTaxRates.aspx

The rates are very high in Florida, with Sanford having the highest local rate of 7.6%. Don't forget the local rate is in addition to the state rate, so total CST in some areas the total rate can be upwards of 15%. Strangely it looks like the Florida CST line on my receipt was calculated using the 5.07% "State Tax" Rate and not the 7.44% "Florida CST" Rate.

Also, the CST information page has this very (not) nice bit of information, "Dealers may not absorb or relieve the customer of all or any part of the Florida communications services tax." Even if Apple wanted to eat the tax and keep the price the same, they can't.

I am having the issue. Also, Apple is charging the wrong tax. In my area, it is 7%, and they are charging 11%. I am on the phone with them now. The response at first is, "well, this is how the system calculates your tax in your area," my response: well, it's wrong, and you might be overcharging a lot more people than just me. They are elevating it now.

I see that I am not alone in all-of-a-sudden Charges on my apple music account without ANY notice! My apple music went up to $11.10 from the $9.99 it has been since apple music started. Like you, I saw the charge (over the weekend) and thought I had been hacked. This is really low of them to sneak this extra $1.00 in “taxes” (FL) on us without any notice! If they get another dollar from every apple music customer in FL, it’s going to add up! What is this $1.00 for? Where is the justification from Apple for this charge? Where is the notice from them and is this how they treat their monthly PAYING subscribers?! Very low Apple. Very LOW!!

Ah, the articles that were pointed out (https://floridarevenue.com/taxes/taxesfees/Pages/cst.aspx and https://www.thetaxadviser.com/issues/2016/jun/digital-streaming-and-technology-platforms-sales-tax-treatment.html) are good resources. It is not cool that Apple did not mention this happening, but it is NOT Apple and their greed. It is government and their greed y'all! It is not sales tax as some have pointed out. Look at the invoice/receipt. Glad I found this thread because Apple Support person did not know how to explain what happened and why very well. "TAXATION IS THEFT" really applies but it is OUR government, not Apple. :-)

This tax is incorrect and is double taxation. We are aleady paying telecommunications tax on our cellular and home Internet services through which Apple Music is streamed. The service may be subject to sales and local sales tax but not state and local communications tax. Apple needs to resolve this in their customers interest.

I just got off with them too! I keep in researching and I have not found anything about being 11-13% percent, at first the iTunes Custumer service was telling me to call my state and ask! The state wasn’t charging me! It’s way too sneaky. I’ve been holding for dear life to apple products, but tomorrow, I’m getting the Samsung phone, it seems like Apple wants to get their losses of sales will current customers. I look and telecommunications taxes in Florida are 7.44% the state of Florida taxes are 6% plus the city which is from 0.5% - 2% at a max of 8%. This is way too weird for my taste. So moving away from Apple products. Good luck to the people who stays with Apple.

This morning I made an in-app purchase of 4.99 through iTunes. I was charged $5.33 living in Ohio. That's 14% where the sales tax in Ohio is 7%. I wonder, where is this tax going exactly? Does a portion go to Ohio or is it a loophole for total collection with Apple. Apple charges the same amount of money for their devices that have half the specs as my Note 10+. Apple also charges developers per app submitted in the AppStore. Android has one fee and may submit unlimited to their PlayStore. Also, android charges no tax. We should stop funding criminal organizations such as Apple
