A few minutes of charging should give you several hours of use.

Try pressing the Option key five times. It should turn on Mouse Keys.

Great, do that and you can't use the keyboard, and switching back & forth continuously, would be an incredible hassle. The option of using the numeric keypad would make more sense, if the "magic keyboard" Apple supplies us even had a numeric keypad!!
