It seems I can import them directly to my timeline but I would like to import individual clips to an event without first exporting them from the photo app to the desktop "then" into an event. Is is possible?

Pick up the items you want in the photo browser and drag to the left to open the library sidebar and have access to the events.
What version are you using? What OS? Post screenshots of what you see in the Photos browsers. In 10.4.7 the popup shows My Albums, Albums, and People. If you go into an album you can select an image from there. You also have access to aMy Photo Stream if you'er using that. You don't have access to iCloud Photo Library, only locally stored images.

The key to your reply is in your last sentence. All of my photos and videos were in the cloud. Once I changed the setting in "photos"prefs to download originals, I was able to drop photos to an event. Thanks so much!

For some reason all my albums and photos do not show up when I click on the photo browser. And, the ones that do show up, I am not able to drag them anywhere. Cannot figure this one out.

I did it once, worked great. Now I cannot seem to get it to work again. I am on Catalina. Only "Albums" and "My Albums" are showing in FCP. This is really starting to bug me. Yes, I can import photos and videos easily using other methods but I just would like to figure this out. It worked once just like you said. I grabbed a pic, dragged it to my left, saw an event and it worked. Now, nothing. What in the heck am I doing wrong?
