imovie unsorted:original media folder
the iMovie package contains folder UnSorted:Original Media which contains an alias for every file on my HD. What is the purpose of this folder, and how is it required for the iMovie app?

Also try creating a new library and then look to see if the same folder is included in Show Package Contents.
What happens when you try opening some of the aliases? Do they actually connect to anything? If so, in what location is the original file to which they are connecting? Are they in an Original Media folder? Is your iMovie library heavily populated with projects and events that could account for 20,000 aliases?
Since they are only aliases they would not be taking up any significant space. Shouldn't be any harm in leaving the file alone. Generally it is not advisable to delete, modify, or move anything from the Show Package Contents as it might corrupt the library. If the folder is in the Show Package Contents it must be there for a reason. Perhaps Catalina and iMovie 10.1.13 have included a way to access the entire Original Media folder. That might be handy.

Hi,
I am running iMovie 10.1.12 on Mojave. I cannot find a folder titled "Unsorted:Original Media". I don't know if it would appear in iMovie 10.1.13 on Catalina.
Can you provide the file path?

I checked the Show Package Contents and there is no "Unsorted:Original Media" folder or file in it. As I said, I am running iMovie 10.1.12, so 10.1.13 may be different.
When you say the folder contains an alias for every folder on your hard drive, are you actually meaning your entire hard drive or just the original media files that are in the iMovie library?

I created a new iMovie library, and there was no UnSorted folder. I also tried several of the aliases, some worked some didn't because I had deleted the file at some time, so I guess the list is not maintained. I have deleted the file, and iMovie seems to work OK. I am going to use the new library and create a few projects in it to see if the UnSorted file gets recreated.
In the meanwhile, thanks for your help. I'll repost to this article if the file reappears in the new library.
Thanks for the update. It is an interesting issue.
It will be interesting to see whether the Unsorted folder will appear in the new library once you start to populate it with media and projects.

the folder contains over 20,000 aliases (.aif, mp3, wav, tif, caf, jpg, pdf, png, bmp, mov, avi). I'm going to backup the file and delete it and see what happens
i have iMovie 10.1.13 installed with macOS 10.15 Catalina. The file in question is in folder "iMovie Library.imovielibrary". Select it in finder and select "Show Package Contents".
