err_connection_reset on Firefox, Chrome, Opera, not on Safari

Since a couple of months I get frequent "err_connection_closed" messages for many websites on the three browsers mentioned. The sites remain perfectly reachable on Safari. None of the remedial steps for solving this do work, only restarting the Mac works for a couple of hours.

I have a strong suspicion there is something in the Chromium engine that causes this, but I lack the skills to diagnose.

I run macOS 10.15 Catalina (problem also happened with Mojave), and Safari 13.0.2

Google Chrome 77.0

Firefox 69.0.3

Opera 64.0

Any suggestions how to get rid of this nuisance?
