max resolution of external display

What determines the max resolution of an external display connected to a 2017 MacBook? I have successfully connected a display capable of 2560x1440 via a HDMI cable, but only get 1080p.

External display for MacBook I connected an additional display to my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) and stumbled on a problem. The native resolution of the display is 1920x1200 but after connecting with the MacBook I get 1600x1000 max. On the specifications, it says that the model supports up to 2560x1600 resolution for external display. I am now buying a new display and I wonder what I am suppose to look for to avoid this problem. I wonder if the proportion of the display has any importance. I will be very grateful if someone can give me any information.

Will my MacBook air (mid 2013) deliver 3440x1440 resolution to an external display? My 2013 macbook air, with thunderbolt port, appears to be incapable of supporting ultra wide screen external displays (3440x1440 resolution). I am currently using a mini display port to HDMI adaptor, but have *just* ordered a thunderbolt to DisplayPort adaptor, to see whether that works. Any suggestions - am I trying to solve an problem which can't be solved?

Thanks for the link. It is good information but only appears to confirm what already works for me.

Is there a way to increase the resolution beyond 1080p on an external display connected to a MacBook?
