Apple Hardware Test on older macs

Any recommendations on how to run Apple Hardware Test on a late 2008 17" MacBook Pro with El Capitan if I don't have the original operating disks? Would third party software like TechTool work as well? This is my first time posting.

There are instructions - for macs that run later systems - but not the latest.

..For hardware introduced before 2013 following test is suited..

A pre-cursor to the Test, a preliminary page is suggested ahead of use:

• Isolating issues in Mac OS X - Apple Support

• How to use Apple Hardware Test on your Mac - Apple Support

I've not used the TechTool branded product since pre-OS X days.

Good luck & happy trails!🌞
