How to use Apple TV with Internet login screen, also streaming movies with Airplay?
Someone asked the question about seven years ago regarding using an AppleTV in a hotel or other environment that requires you to use a login screen to access the Internet. It was never answered.
We were recently on a cruise, and took our AppleTV, and although we had access to the Internet through our phone, when we tried to set up the AppleTV, it could not access the Internet, we believe, because of the Internet login screen that required you to enter a username and password to access the ship’s Internet. We also tried using the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot for the AppleTV, which was connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, but that didn’t work either...the hotspot option is not available when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
I know you can also use the Apple TV when it is not connected to the Internet by using Airplay to play what’s on the phone or iPad screen, but this did not work at all on the ship. We would just get the spinning icon and it would never play movies on the Apple TV that were being streamed to the phone. We tried both movies that were on the phone, and also streaming content from Amazon Prime to the Apple TV, which works when we’re at home.
Another challenge is that we wiped out the settings on the AppleTV trying to get this to work, so then it was trying to reactivate the AppleTV. If anyone ever runs into this problem, the solution we found was to use the cellular connection in Mexico (free to US AT&T users) on the iPad, then set it up as a hotspot, connect to the hotspot with the iPhone, then activate the Apple TV using the iPhone. This did activate the AppleTV. Any other solution I had found on support pages did not work.
if anyone has successfully set up their AppleTV for use in a hotel or environment that requires a login separate from the Wi-Fi password, I would appreciate knowing how this is done.
