Time machine backup since Catalina

I upgraded to Catalina yesterday, and when my Apple Time Capsule (3tb) commenced a backup, it appeared to want to backup my entire system, approximately 450gb. I stopped it as it didn't seem right, but each time it wants to start it seems to want to backup my entire system.

I have about 500gb space left on the device so it has capacity, but it doesn't seem to want to pickup from where it left off prior to the upgrade.

I can see previous backups, eventually, it takes a while to show them, and i have to click on 'yesterday' and 'today' a few times for them to show. And it does appear to be able to verify backups - although i have had a network error from time to time which i did not have before. I am just running another verification now to be sure.

I have read many posts and i'm not sure what to do - if i leave it to do the whole backup it will take up loads of space on the time capsule - will it eventually pick up from where it left off?

Thanks.

When you upgraded your OS it changed or replaced a huge number of files. The first backup under the upgraded OS will be large.

If you have apps like Photos and open them they will upgrade your entire photos library. That will then be backed up.

I suggest you trust Time Machine and just let it run, uninterrupted, until it ends. It knows how to manage space on the backup drive.
