Locked by former employee, no longer with company, how to unlock? No access to his email, as he used a personal email.

Supply Apple with the iPad and its purchase receipt. If it's managed by Apple Configurator, the lock can also be removed that way.

unlock activation lock trying to reset an Ipad2, giving me the activation lock. problem is, i do not have the apple id/email as it was associated with my old company (i retired). It was my device but i was using at work and home. Is there a way to reset the activation lock?

If the iPad was not managed with a device management solution, then you'll need to take the iPad, purchase receipt, and company rep to an Apple Store and request they unlock it.
