Hey there, Brian,
Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you have some concerns over the performance of your Mac since installing the new macOS Catalina. It seems to be running slower than expected. I'm happy to help!
There are a variety of reasons you may be experiencing slower performance since updating. First, when you update your macOS software, it often introduces new features and settings. This is especially true if you make an update from one macOS family to another, like moving from Mojave to Catalina. While your computer is adjusting to these changes, it will use resources in the background, which can temporarily impact how the tasks you ask it to perform run.
This shouldn't last long, though, and if you notice your computer is still behaving slower than expected after a few days, there are troubleshooting steps you can take. Try the following:
Have a great day!

Hi Brenden
Thanks for your detailed response, my iMac is back up to speed again now. Interestingly, the application that was most sluggish (Banktivity 5) had an update a couple of days back and now everything is good.
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for following up, Brian!
We're glad to hear everything is working as expected now. It was our pleasure helping!
Cheers!
