My excel and word documents are locked on my desktop. I cannot close them or open them. They just sit there. I got a window that asked me to do something... whatever I did locked everything I was working on.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
